FDA of NSW Members are now Members of The National Funeral Directors Association of Australia Ltd
The National Funeral Directors Association of Australia Ltd (NFDA) had it's origins some 30 years ago when a group of like-minded, 100% Australian Owned Funeral Homes, decided to band together with the aim of making the general public aware of the degree to which foreign owned, multi-national funeral providers had infiltrated the Australian Funeral market. Concerns over excessive prices and reports "hard-selling and upselling" of funeral goods and services and the general lack of consumer awareness led a number of the 100% Australian Owned Funeral Homes, particularly those in South East Queensland, to form the Association of Australian Owned Funeral Directors Ltd (AAFD). Over time, it could be said that the AAFD achieved it's goals and much of the foreign ownership of Australian Funeral Homes reverted back to local ownership, albeit with a small number of very large "corporate" funeral providers remaining prominent in the market. The members of the AAFD, realising that they could have a positve impact for consumers in the Australian market, made the decision to re-brand as the National Funeral Directors Association of Australia Ltd and to represent their membership of smaller "independent" Funeral Homes to government and other regulators. At the same time ensuring that all NFDA Members adhered to a strict Code of Ethics and followed professional "best practice" in all of their dealings with consumers. In 2024, the Board of Funeral Directors' Association of NSW Ltd (FDA of NSW), the last remaining "state based" Association of Funeral Directors, decided that a national presence was becoming increasingly important when representing members interests to Regulators. Following extensive research and discussion with a number of interested parties, the Board reccommended to the Members that the FDA of NSW amalgamate with and become a part of the NFDA. The members of both Associations agreed to this proposal and now all members of the FDA of NSW, at 30 June 2024, have become full members of the NFDA, bringing total NFDA membership to just under 200 Funeral Service Providers with members in all States and mainland Territories of the Commonwealth*.
